Greeting From the Home Front...

What a nice day we had last Sunday for our Oktoberfest – the desserts were yummy (I taste tested quite a few!!) and those that attended were treated to a musical feast by Lane Lindseth who played both the accordion and piano.  Everyone enjoyed his medley of old time tunes.  Come back again soon Lane! Congratulations to our raffle winners:  Maureen Muecke $200 cash; Marie Hamm $50 Cenex  gift card and Mary Omlid $50 Casey’s gift card.

On Tuesday night, resident Kathy (Meyers) Thomas was able to attend the movie “All Saints” at the DelChar Theatre thanks to a gift from Cherished Hopes.  Cherished Hopes is a program provided by the North Dakota Long Term Care Association to assist facilities with granting wishes of their residents.  Many facilities might not always have the means to accommodate these hopes and dreams and Cherished Hopes steps in to help.  Kathy’s wish was to see a movie at the DelChar which she remembered while growing up in Mayville.  Afterwards the staff drove Kathy around Mayville to see places she recalled as a child including her childhood home. She said she had a wonderful time!

This week the residents had newscurrents on Monday morning and then made Banana Split Cups during Kitchen Cappers in the afternoon.    We all definitely needed Sit & Be Fit on Tuesday morning after all the desserts on Sunday and the Banana Splits on Monday.  There was also Rhythm Band in the afternoon which got our toes a tapping.  Wednesday brought Name That Tune in the morning and Men’s Club in the afternoon.  The men are sanding and painting a wood project.  Other residents played a Halloween Bean Bag toss.  We had Bible Study Thursday morning followed by Pin the Nose on the Pumpkin in the afternoon.   There is church on Friday followed by Pretty Nails and Happy ½ hour. On Saturday we will be playing Bingo at 2 p.m. along with Kaffee Hus in the dining room from 2-3:30.  Our Saturday Movie matinee is “Miracles from Heaven”.  It sounds like a good movie – a child lives with a rare incurable disease and despite the dire prognosis her mother searches for a cure.  Everything changes in an instant when Anna tells an amazing story of a visit to heaven after surviving a headlong tumble into a tree.  Her family and Drs are baffled when she begins to show signs of recovery from her fatal condition.  Based on a true story and best-selling book. On Sunday Sandy will be here to play Halloween Wheel of Fortune at 2 p.m.

Next week we start off with Newscurrents in the morning and Noodle Ball in the afternoon – will have to let you know next week just what Noodle Ball is! It’s time for the Auxiliary Birthday Party on Tuesday.  Gran will be the hostess.  We will be reminiscing about cars on Wednesday morning and then we have a special event – Pumpkin Painting!!!  The residents and helpers from MSU always paint some interesting and unique pumpkins and the pumpkins will be part of our Halloween decorating contest that starts on the 25th.  Special Thanks to Irma and Al Bennett who generously donated and let us pick  the pumpkins for our painting project.   Thursday brings Choir in the morning and Bunco and Pretty Nails in the afternoon.  It must be the last Friday of the month (can you believe it) because the VFW/American Legion will be here for “real” bingo in the afternoon.  Of course we still have church and mass in the morning!

Happy Birthday to resident Wes Laughery who celebrates his birthday next week on October 27th.  Sun Center Residents Liz Bradner and Barb Gilbertson also have birthdays on the 27th.  Three staff members will also be celebrating birthdays next week Carol Lande (October 24), Nina Gurgian (October 25), and Lee Brenna  (October 26).  Happy Birthday to all of you and enjoy your special day!!

Until next  time … a thought for the week … To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice your gift …
