Greetings from “The Home” front …

As the nice weather continues we have been able to do many outdoor activities.  Thank you Mother Nature for these beautiful days!

On Monday the van went sightseeing out to the Nysveen farm to see their cattle operation.  Right now they have 20 calves and 20 “mothers”.  Judy Nysveen is the daughter of resident Duane Lyng so he especially enjoyed the trip.  We also drove thru Riverwood to supervise the new houses that are being built and our trip wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Ma’s Drive In for ice cream cones!  While we were sightseeing, our other residents played Crosswords and enjoyed Lotion in Motion.  Tuesday brought Sit & Be Fit and Rhythm Band.  We had the Price is Right on Wednesday morning followed by Crafts in the afternoon.  Our crafty ladies and men decoupaged small vases to decorate their rooms. They even got matching flowers to go in them!  The Family Picnic was held Wednesday night in the courtyard and picnic shelter.  We had a good turnout plus good food and great entertainment by Larry Charon.   There was reading, pretty nails and Lemonade on the Patio on Thursday – plus bingo in the evening.  The American Legion/VFW were here on Friday for money bingo – our residents sure enjoy that!  Thank you to the men and women of these great veteran organizations that come every month to spend time with us.  On Saturday we have Kaffee Hus from 2-3:30 in the dining room plus 5 Square in the activity room at 2 p.m.  Our Saturday movie matinee at 3 p.m. is “Miracle” – it is the story of the US Hockey Team’s upset win over the Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympics.  A very inspiring movie that you won’t want to miss.

Next week we have Newscurrents and Ladderball on Monday plus the van is going on it’s final sightseeing trip for the season.  After Sit & Be Fit on Tuesday it is the Auxiliary Birthday Party with Riverside Church as hostess.  Marion Johnson will be playing the piano and Lloyd Arnegaard is singing. And I’ve heard there is cupcakes for dessert.   There is choir, a new activity called “Wishful Wednesday” and Bunco on Wednesday.  We have reading on Thursday morning followed by Kitchen Cappers in the afternoon.  The resident cooks will be making Dill Pickle Rollups – sounds good!  If our good weather continues, the activity staff will be giving wheelchair rides outside so residents can enjoy the flowers and courtyard. After church services on Friday morning, there is a picnic dinner in the shelter plus smoothies in the afternoon. We also have pretty nails.

Our sympathy to the friends and family of two of our residents who passed away last week on August 16th.  Eldris Wilkens enjoyed playing the organ and attending musical activities.  She was also a regular at our coffee time in the morning visiting with her friends at the “round table”.  Warren “Lefty” Stromberg was with us for a short time but did enjoy hearing devotions and visiting with staff and family.  Rest in Peace Eldris and Lefty – you will be missed.

On a happier note we celebrate several birthdays next week.  Resident Margaret Larson has her birthday August 27th.  There are three Sun Center residents with birthdays – LaVonne Christianson also on August 27th, Jean Cameron on August 30 and Joan Simengaard on August 31st.  We have three staff birthdays to finish out the month – Nicole Schonauer (August 26), Joan Gorres (August 29) and Terri Holm (August 31).  Happy Birthday to all of you and enjoy your special day!

My thought for the week got cut off last week so I am going to repeat it this week because I think it is something good to remember …  we rise by lifting others ….
