Greetings from "The Home" front...
Congratulations to Carol Moen and Ardell (Ardy) Lovejoy who were named our 2020 Valentine Queen and King! They were crowned at our Valentine Party last week. They will be a fun couple to represent Luther Memorial Home at various events this coming year.
Thank you’s go out to Generation II 4-H club that delivered handmade valentines to our LMH Veterans with a heartfelt thank you on each one. It was nice of you to think of these servicemen in our nursing home. Also thank you to Gate City Bank for delivering pizza to our staff last week and also a huge basket of various puzzles, activity books, and valentine goodies for our residents to use. We appreciate all that you do for us.
We thought Pat and Vanna might be here for Wheel of Fortune on Sunday but apparently the snowy weather & below freezing temperature scared them away. The residents had a good time guessing sayings anyway. On Monday after newscurrents there was President’s Day trivia and table top activities. We also had bingo in the evening. Tuesday brought Sit & Be Fit and Rhythm Band. On Wednesday we started out with Choir with Nancy in the morning and then crafts with Molly in the afternoon. The residents made and decorated a notepad to keep by their bedside phone. Pastor Deb was here for Bible Study on Thursday morning and we had a word association game called Just Sayin’ in the afternoon followed by a spelling bee. There wass also bingo in the evening. After Mass and Church on Friday it will be time for pretty nails and happy ½ hour. We have noodle ball and bingo on Saturday plus Kaffee Hus from 2-3:30 in the afternoon. We have some delicious new treats and ice cream for you to try out so be sure to stop by for a visit.
Pam will be here on Sunday afternoon to sing and play her guitar at 2 p.m. On Monday – the last week of February – can you believe it – seems like we were just celebrating Christmas!!! We have newscurrents and Kitchen Cappers on Monday – the residents will be making homemade pretzels. There is a special treat in store on Tuesday at the Auxiliary Birthday Party which is hosted by Bruflat church. In honor of Mardi Gras, the MPCG Jazz Band will be performing in the dining room and the Bruflat ladies will be serving a traditional mardi gras dessert – moon pies!!! This sounds like a super fun afternoon. We have Name That Tune on Wednesday morning followed by Bunco in the afternoon and then an Ash Wednesday Service at 6:30 p.m.in the chapel. It’s trivia, popcorn and pretty nails on Thursday. The American Legion/VFW will be here on Friday after mass and church for $$$ bingo. That always brings a full house.
We have several resident birthdays next week – Shirley Radloff on February 22, Delores Holden on February 24, Ron Semmens on February 25, and Carol Peltier on February 27. There are also six staff birthdays – Audrey Beltran (Feb 21), Clarence (Junior) Nelson (Feb 22), Rebecca Pekrul (Feb 24), Heather Satrom (Feb 25), Sue Edwardson (Feb 27) and Laura Aanstad (Feb 28). Happy Birthday to all of you and enjoy your special day!
We were saddened by the loss of three of our residents last week. Wes Laughery passed away February 10th; Alice Strand died on February 11 (one month shy of her 102 birthday); and Norman Grindeland passed away February 13th. Wes enjoyed visiting with staff and talking about his adventures in the woods – especially the discovery of two bear cubs that he brought home to raise after their mother bear died. Alice enjoyed hearing devotions and singing and right up until her last day could recite the Lord’s Prayer and various Bible verses. Norman enjoyed playing horseshoes during activities and later on hearing devotions and having a snack of puff corn and an old-fashioned ice-cold root beer. Rest in peace Wes, Alice and Norm – you will be missed.
Until next time … a thought for the week … many people spend half their time wishing for things they could have if they didn’t spend half their time wishing …
