Greetings from “The Home” front …
WOW! Our residents are quite the artists! With a little help from the MSU DECCA students we painted pumpkins on Wednesday and did they ever turn out cute! They will be used as decorations throughout our hallways. Pumpkin entries are also coming in for our “Decorate a Pumpkin” contest – you can vote for your favorite pumpkin by putting money in the jar next to it. All monies collected will be donated to the May-Port Food Pantry. A prize will be awarded to 1st place staff and resident entries.
Luther Memorial Home residents also voted to sponsor a food drive for our local food pantry. The collection table is located in the lobby. Everyone is welcome to donate to this worthy cause.
We have been enjoying other activities this week also. Monday there was newscuurrents in the morning and noodle ball in the afternoon. What is noodle ball??? Residents used large foam “noodles” to bat a balloon back and forth to each other. There was quite a bit of laughter and excitement during this activity. Pastor Keith Walka provided entertainment at the Auxiliary Birthday Party on Tuesday. He sang and played his guitar – many of the residents joined him in a sing along of favorite old time hymns. The ladies of Gran Church served sweet breads and Halloween candy for the dessert. In addition to pumpkin painting on Wednesday, the residents reminisced about cars – what they drove and how cars have changed over the years. They were also surprised at the price of gas these days! There was choir, Bunco and pretty nails on Thursday plus bingo in the evening. It’s the last Friday of the month and that means the VFW/American Legion will be here for real Bingo in the afternoon. Of course we have church and mass in the morning. On Saturday there is trivia at 2 p.m. plus Kaffee Hus from 2-3:30. Our Saturday movie matinee is “Star Wars V”. If you are a Star Wars fan, you won’t want to miss this one.
Next week the residents will be frosting Halloween cookies during Kitchen Capers on Monday. We will use them for our Halloween party on Tuesday but I am sure there will be a little taste testing during Kitchen Capers just to make sure they are all right. Tuesday will be a busy day with Sit & Be Fit in the morning plus our costume contest and Halloween Party in the afternoon. Leonard & Betty Wahl will be proving music during the party – it will be fun to see everyone’s costumes. We settle down a little bit on Wednesday with choir in the morning and then the residents will be making a Thankful
Tree in preparation for Thanksgiving. Thursday we are playing board games with a class from the college in the morning and then there is pretty nails in the afternoon. We have a special event on Friday – after church and in the afternoon we are having a Farewell Party for our social worker Jackie Kraling. Everyone is invited to come and say goodbye to this special woman who has been a part of LMH for ten years. Jackie is taking another job with Traill County Social Services working with children in the foster care system.
I know it’s early – we haven’t even celebrated Thanksgiving yet – but be sure to mark your calendar for December 3rd for our annual Hanging of the Greens celebration and bake sale. More details will follow but I wanted to be sure you were aware of the date.
We have one resident and one staff member celebrating birthdays on Halloween (October 31st) – Resident Margaret Oakland and CNA Leslie Zapata. Staff member Manih Oshkosh has a birthday on November 2nd otherwise there aren’t any other birthdays to celebrate until next week. Happy Birthday to all three of you and enjoy your special day!
